Clicker Training
Clicker training is fast becoming one of the most widely used methods of training in the country. But what is a clicker and how does it work? In order for the clicker to mean something to the animal, start by clicking and feeding the animal, but don’t just give a treat, sometimes vary it up, click and give the dog all his food, or click and give a bone. Variability is going to make the clicker and your relationship much stronger.
The clicker should mean two things to the animal, reinforcement is coming and mark the end of the behavior. Why use a clicker, why not just give the animal a treat when it does the correct behavior? The answer is timing, timing your delivery of reinforcement is very important.
Training can be done very effectively without a clicker, but if used correctly a clicker will cut down on training time and confusion.
